Impregnating Oils protect the wood from within
Wood impregnation is the most traditional method and gives furniture, stairs, and floors a natural, matte look and feel. The oils penetrate deep into the wood, filling the pores and reliably protecting the wood from within. They do not form a surface layer but rather an open-pored impregnation. The gloss level is rather low, and the enhancement is high: the grain and natural color of the wood are robustly highlighted. It corresponds roughly to the color of an untreated wooden surface when it is wet. Our impregnating oils are so-called blends: a mixture of various modified and drying vegetable oils such as linseed oil and wood oil. Each of our impregnating oils has its individual strengths and is available in different solid content variants: in the medium-solid variant and in the high-solid variant.
MEDIUM-SOLID IMPREGNATIONS
OLI-NATURA Project Oil // Furniture Oil
OLI-NATURA Project Oil is primarily a universal furniture oil with a solid content of 60%. To optimize the oil's penetration behavior, a high-purity, medical-grade isoparaffin component is added. This isoparaffin component acts as a "carrier": it makes the oil significantly thinner, allows it to penetrate the wood much better, and makes it very easy to apply. After applying the oil, the isoparaffin evaporates, and the remaining oil hardens inside the wood.
For normally used furniture, as well as frames and carcases, a single coat of oil provides sufficient basic saturation. To achieve higher wood saturation and thus higher resistance, a second coat is recommended for heavily used surfaces such as table tops.
The oil is easiest to apply with a brush or cloth. After a short working time, the oil should be polished again with a cotton cloth or oil-absorbing cloth. This minimizes differences in gloss that can occur due to the wood's varying absorbency.
This oil is particularly recommended for furniture, small parts, or frame furniture that are difficult to coat with a pad.
HIGH-SOLID IMPREGNATIONS
OLI-NATURA Worktop-Oil // Furniture Oil
The solvent-free OLI-NATURA Worktop-Oil is a high-solid oil with a solid content of 100%. It is particularly recommended for professional initial impregnation & care of furniture & worktops in kitchens & bathrooms. Worktop-Oil has a high tung oil content, which makes the surface very water-repellent and resistant. This also increases the viscosity, so that the worktop oil adheres well to vertical surfaces. The surface appears fuller and has a matte look.
Thanks to its maximum solid content, Worktop-Oil is very economical. All of the oil remains in the wood, cross-links and hardens to be tough and elastic. None of the impregnation evaporates, which would then have to be replaced. This means that, ideally, the wood is optimally saturated and fully impregnated with just one coat of oil.
Due to its higher viscosity and the absence of solvents, Worktop-Oil is also somewhat "tougher" to process, which means it needs a little "mechanical" help for penetration. Working it in with a pad – by hand or with an eccentric sander – has proven effective. This achieves maximum wood saturation and optimal penetration depth. However, other application methods such as troweling, brushing, wiping, or dipping are also possible.
Wetting the wood before oiling is also a proven pretreatment to increase the absorbency of the wood surface. At the same time, this flushes out the tannins from oak, walnut & co.
OLI-NATURA HS Profiöl // Floor Oil
OLI-NATURA HS Profiöl is essentially a parquet oil. It is solvent-free, has a high-solid content of 100%, and particularly excels on wooden floors such as solid wood planks, country house planks, or ship decks. It is recommended for professional initial impregnation in commercial parquet laying and complies with Giscode group Ö10+, is DIBt-certified and Baubook-listed.
The viscosity of OLI-NATURA HS Profiöl is optimally suited for trowel/roller application on parquet and wooden floors. Afterwards, the oil application is polished with a single-disc machine and an underlying beige pad until the surface is saturated. Professionals then often give the floor the final touch with a polishing pad.
Ideally, one coat of oil is sufficient, as none of the impregnation evaporates, which would then have to be replaced. Accordingly, 100% of the oil hardens in the wood and provides excellent resistance.
A notable advantage of the parquet oil is that the oil application remains "open for a long time." This gives the applicator sufficient time to oil large sections of the surface before polishing and can work at a daily pace.
Also available as a 2-C TWO-COMPONENT OIL: If speed is critical, OLI-NATURA HS Profiöl can also be processed with OLI-NATURA Hardener. However, 2K processing should be reserved exclusively for professional users.
HERE ARE SOME MORE TIPS
The absorbency of the wood must be saturated in any case before polishing. The absorbency of the wood depends on the type and condition of the wood, the working method of the user, and the wood sanding. In general, the following applies:
- What the wood absorbs, it must also receive.
- What the wood does not absorb, must be removed again while still wet.
- The wood must be completely dry on the surface after impregnation.
If the excess is not removed, the oil will remain as a sticky film on the surface, and in the best case, there will be a significant delay in drying.
Since the impregnation provides protection for the wood from within, it follows that more heavily impregnated wood is better protected than less heavily impregnated wood.
The protective effect must be refreshed by occasional re-oiling. Surface scratches or damages in an oiled wood surface do not expose unprotected wood, as the oil protects the wood from within. Minor dents or scratches can therefore also be repaired easily: simply sand and re-oil the affected areas. Any potential color difference will equalize over time.
NOTE ON THE RISK OF SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION!
Special attention must be paid to oil-soaked rags and cloths, which can spontaneously combust due to heat build-up. Naturally drying oils harden by absorbing atmospheric oxygen. This generates heat, which is normally released into the environment and is completely harmless. However, in oil-soaked and crumpled rags, cloths, pads or sponges, the heat cannot escape, so they can spontaneously combust in the worst case. Therefore, you should never carelessly leave oily cloths or rags lying around, but rather soak them with water and hang them outdoors to dry. Once treated in this way, they can be disposed of safely after drying. Alternatively, oil-soaked rags and sponges can also be stored underwater or temporarily in an airtight container.
