Which wood oils are food-safe? Which OLI-NATURA oils & waxes are LFGB-certified and allowed to bear the "GLASS-FORK SYMBOL"?
In many areas, oiled wooden surfaces come into contact with food. This contact should, of course, be harmless. The oiled surface must be safe for health after complete curing, must not release any ingredients into food, and must not alter the smell or taste of the food it comes into contact with. Any migration, i.e., any transfer from the material to the food, must be prevented.
Our OLI-NATURA oils & waxes are intended for the surface treatment of wood or wood-like materials. They are designed to cure within the wood, allowing the oiled surface to come into contact with food without concern. They have a high proportion of unsaturated vegetable oils and dry naturally to a tough-elastic finish with the help of atmospheric oxygen. The impregnation is permanent, meaning it is fixed and stable. In addition, the oils used are finely purified and no longer contain any substances that could later form a breeding ground for bacteria in the wood.
All our oils & waxes meet the requirements of the German Food and Feed Code (LFGB) for consumer goods with regard to their saliva and perspiration resistance. This test is based on standards DIN 53160-1 and -2. Furthermore, they comply with toy standard DIN EN 71-3 (Safety of Toys) and are suitable for food contact.
To substantiate this, we had five OLI NATURA oils & waxes tested and certified for "food safety" by an independent German testing laboratory with a "certificate and seal". This voluntary product certification plays a major role for many cabinet makers, joiners, parquet layers, and wood craftsmen, as more and more customers are looking for tested wood impregnation when choosing products. The LFGB seal fulfills this customer wish and also offers an important guidance function. To make them easily recognizable at a glance, the latest labels now bear the Glass-Fork Symbol. The suitability and approval for using the symbol are subject to strict and recurring tests.
What does food-safe mean? - The testing procedure
In strict test procedures, wooden surfaces treated with our oils were analyzed according to the Consumer Goods Ordinance (BedGgstV) and the Food and Feed Code (LFGB). Experts checked whether the limit values were met and whether there was no risk to the consumer. Authenticity and migration tests, sensory tests, and analytical test results were also included in the evaluation. Our wood oils passed the test requirements with flying colors in every respect and significantly undercut all limit values. This means: The material used is harmless to health after complete curing and can come into contact with food.
Which products are allowed to bear the Glass-Fork Symbol?
The LFGB-certified oils include our OLI-NATURA HS Hard Wax Oil, OLI-NATURA HS Professional Oil, OLI-NATURA Worktop-Oil, OLI-NATURA Hard Wax Oil, and OLI-NATURA Linseed Oil Varnish.
Each of the tested wood oils has its individual strengths: The parquet oils "OLI-NATURA HS Hard Wax Oil" and "OLI-NATURA HS Professional Oil" have their advantages on wooden floors such as solid wood planks, country house floorboards, or ship's decks. The new "OLI-NATURA Worktop-Oil" is particularly recommended as a kitchen and worktop oil made of solid wood. Our universal "OLI-NATURA Hard Wax Oil" gives all furniture, kitchen fronts, panels, side panels, as well as dining tables and chairs a natural look. And the "OLI-NATURA Linseed Oil Varnish" scores on wooden bowls, cheese plates, bread boards, or knife blocks. But also small items made of natural wood or bamboo such as bottle openers, small boxes, closures, or wooden spoons get a food-safe coating with our linseed oil varnish.
