Wood indoors can be protected and enhanced with varnishes or oils. But which system is suitable for which surface? Here you will learn how varnish and wood oil differ, how both systems work, and what is important for application and care.

In short: Varnish forms a closed protective layer on the wood. Oil penetrates the pores, protects from within, and preserves the natural feel.

After drying, varnishes form a resistant surface film. Depending on the product, a glossy, semi-matte, or matte surface is created. The film seals the wood and provides a mechanical protective layer with comparatively high durability. At the same time, the breathability of the wood is restricted.

If the varnish layer is damaged, the underlying wood can be exposed. Water penetrating through scratches can cause unsightly gray discoloration. For proper renovation, the varnished surface often has to be completely sanded down and rebuilt.

Varnishes are available as clear or colored varnishes, and on a water-based or solvent-based basis. Water-based varnishes usually have a lower VOC content. Additionally, varnishes are distinguished by their application and area of use, for example, as parquet varnish, spray varnish, or dipping varnish.

A varnish application is generally more complex than an oil treatment. Depending on the system and area of application, two to three coats of approximately 100–120 g/m² each are required. The varnish can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed.

Lacquered surfaces are easy to clean: Regular dusting and damp wiping are usually sufficient. For sealed wooden floors, a suitable parquet polish can occasionally be applied to maintain the protective film.

Oils: Open-Pored Protection from Within

Natural oil-based oils do not form a closed film. They impregnate the wood with an open pore structure, penetrate the pores, and protect from within. The wood remains breathable and can release absorbed moisture. Oiled surfaces usually have a low gloss level and pronounced enhancement of the wood grain.

Because the protection is within the wood, minor damage does not immediately expose large areas of unprotected wood. Dents and scratches can often be sanded locally and re-oiled without having to treat the entire surface again.

In addition to unpigmented oils, there are colored oils. Unpigmented variants highlight the natural color and grain; how much the wood is enhanced also depends on the wood type. Oils also differ in their solids content. High-solid oils, or HS oils, have a particularly high solids content.

Wood oils are versatile and easy to apply. With approximately 20–40 g/m² per coat, they are very economical. Depending on the oil type and the absorbency of the wood, one to two coats are often sufficient for good resistance to dirt and liquids.

Oiled surfaces have an antistatic effect. For cleaning, a dry or damp cloth is usually sufficient. Floors can be cleaned regularly with a mop, vacuum cleaner, or broom. To maintain the protective effect long-term, the surface should be refreshed with a suitable care oil when needed.
