Its annual rings point upwards, the wood fibers are vertical.
This creates a surface that not only looks beautiful – and withstands high loads.
The blade cuts between the fibers – not against them.
End grain wood is open. Untreated, it absorbs liquid deeply.
Therefore, end grain wood is oiled – so that the open fibers are saturated and the protection works deep in the wood.
End grain wood, in particular, absorbs oil very well because the vertically standing wood fibers absorb a lot.
The oil is bound in the material.
This is precisely why an oil is needed that penetrates deeply and is suitable for contact with food. This is where linseed oil varnish comes in. It saturates the open fibers, protects the wood from within and is permanently bound in the material. A fine protective layer forms on the surface – not like varnish, but as part of the wood.
At the same time, the effect of the wood changes:
The color becomes deeper, the grain stands out more clearly, the surface appears more vibrant.
Not applied, but from the material itself.
Small cuts and scratches hardly impair the protection, because what is damaged on the surface is already protected underneath.
The result is a surface that can be used, can be re-oiled at any time – and gains with time.
