“Wood has always been a symbol of quality and elegance in furniture making. However, fewer and fewer specialists today process natural materials by hand, so handmade furniture made from solid wood is considered a curiosity,” say István Tukacs and György Ács. “Wood is a living material. Even after processing, it never stops breathing, moving, and changing – whether in furniture, flooring, or wooden houses.” “Our profession and respect for the natural product wood demand that the furniture we produce is worthy of its material,” remarks István Tukacs. Therefore, it is important for the two wood engineers to preserve the properties of the wood and treat it naturally. The young entrepreneurs learned woodworking from scratch and gained professional experience both at home and abroad. In 2012, they founded the furniture manufactory "STOKI" to create something of their own. István Tukacs and György Ács primarily work with local fruit and hardwood trees, which do not have to be "perfect" at all. "In series production, all natural variations in wood are considered defects that make processing more expensive and limit usability. Such defects include cracks, knots, various discolorations, and deformations," says István Tukacs. "We, on the other hand, specifically look for such 'wood defects'. Such deformations and naturally inspired color spots make a tabletop or chest of drawers particularly individual, and creating a duplicate is simply impossible," emphasizes György Ács, adding: "The changes in the wood often make our work harder, as the material is more complicated to saw and plane. But the end result always compensates us for the greater effort."
