Garden furniture and patios made of teak, bangkirai or robinia are beautiful. To keep them that way, surface protection treatment is important. The amount of maintenance required depends significantly on the type of wood. Hardwoods such as teak, for example, are naturally very resistant and require little protection. However, the weather will turn them silvery-grey over time. Not everyone likes the natural patina. If you want to avoid this discolouration, you can regularly refresh the natural wood colour with the hardwood oil »OLI-NATURA Yacht & Teak Oil«.

The hardwood oil »OLI-NATURA Yacht & Teak Oil« in »Natural« and »Teak« protects the wood against sun, rain and greying. Equipped with UV protection, it provides a weather-resistant surface for garden furniture, terraces, pool surrounds and yacht decks made of hardwood and exotic wood as well as pressure-impregnated softwood.
The naturally drying oil based on natural oil does not form a surface film, but rather an open-pored impregnation. It does not crack, peel or flake, but penetrates deep into the wood and fills the capillaries. This ensures very good water resistance. The wood remains diffusion-permeable and can release absorbed moisture.
In the colourless »Natural« version, the grain and colour of the wood are particularly beautifully highlighted. The lightly pigmented »Teak« version brings transparent colour to the wood. The pigments retain the structural appearance of the wood and give the surface a natural colour. At the same time, the UV-stable colour pigments help to counteract the natural discolouration of the wood for as long as possible. Both oils are free of biocidal active ingredients and can therefore also be used for wood indoors.
Before application: prepare the wood
But before you apply the wood oil, even well-preserved and well-maintained garden furniture and terraces must be cleaned: All dirt is thoroughly removed with »OLI-NATURA Outdoor Wood Cleaner« or a mild wood soap and a brush and rinsed with plenty of clear water. Always work in the direction of the grain and allow to dry thoroughly. For an optimal result, sand down the wood fibres that have risen due to the moisture with sandpaper until the surface feels smooth again. Now sweep off all sanding dust and wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth. If you oil your garden furniture outdoors, please do not do so in direct sunlight or wet weather.
Apply with a flat brush or cloth
As soon as the surface is dry, apply the oil thinly from all sides with a flat brush or a cloth. Always brush in the direction of the grain and, after a short exposure time, wipe off the excess oil with a dry, lint-free cotton cloth. For highly absorbent woods or very weathered surfaces, a second coat of oil may be recommended after drying overnight. Depending on the temperature, it is dust-dry after 1–2 hours and fully cured after 2–3 days.
Re-oil once or twice a year – without sanding
Oiled wood also turns grey over time. If you want to avoid this discolouration for aesthetic reasons, you need to refresh the natural wood tone regularly. Depending on how much the wood is exposed to wind, sun or rain, you should re-oil the wood once or twice a year. This renews the protective effect and refills the wood pores with oil. A good indication that the wood needs care is when the water resistance decreases, the surface appears rougher and the wood slowly turns grey. Re-oiling is easily possible without sanding.
Caution: Risk of spontaneous combustion!
Particular attention should be paid to oil-soaked rags and cloths, which can spontaneously ignite due to heat build-up. This is because naturally drying oils harden by absorbing atmospheric oxygen. This generates heat, which is normally released into the environment and is completely harmless. However, in oil-soaked and crumpled rags, cloths, pads or sponges, the heat cannot escape, so they can spontaneously ignite in the worst case. Therefore, never leave oily cloths or rags lying around carelessly, but soak them in water, hang them outdoors and let them dry. Once treated, they can be disposed of safely after drying. Brushes, however, can be cleaned with white spirit after application and then reused.
