HS Profiöl vs. Projektöl: Siblings With Many Differences

While HS Profiöl scores with full high-solid performance and efficiency – plus the option of hardener processing – Projektöl impresses with its self-penetration and easy application. Which wood finish is better suited for your woodworking projects? Find out more in this detailed blog post!

HS Profiöl and Projektöl are siblings from the same OLI-NATURA product family and share the same high-quality oil blend. Both protect the wood from within without leaving a film on the surface. However, they have different strengths – primarily in their solids content:
  • HS Profiöl: 100% solids content – solvent-free (High-Solid).
  • Projektöl: 60% solids content – solvent-based (Medium-Solid).

But what does that mean in practice?

WHAT IS THE SOLIDS CONTENT?

The solids content describes how much oil remains in the wood and hardens after drying.

For HS Profiöl, this means that 100% of the oil remains 100% in the wood – nothing evaporates. This usually means that one application is sufficient to saturate and protect the wood.

Projektöl contains a proportion of medical-grade isoparaffin (surgical spirit). This acts as a "transport helper" that pulls the oil deep into the wood pores and simplifies application. After evaporation, the oil settles into the pores. A second application ensures optimal pore filling and maximum protection.

DIFFERENCES IN APPLICATION & AREAS OF USE

The application of both oils is tailored to their respective strengths:

HS Profiöl
With 100% solids content, HS Profiöl is ideal for flat, heavily used surfaces such as worktops, doors, stairs, or wooden floors. It is even used in roller coating systems in the parquet industry, where block-free packaging is required immediately after application. The oil is applied with a brush, roller, or trowel and then deeply worked in by hand or machine with a beige buffing pad. After 30–60 minutes of drying time, excess is polished off with a white polishing pad, and the surface is completely impregnated with just one application. For heavily used areas, an HS hardener (10:1) can optionally be added.

Projektöl
Projektöl impresses with its versatility and ease of use, ideal for serial applications, smaller projects, or pieces of wood with complex geometries. It is applied with cotton pads, a brush, or a roller, penetrates the wood independently, and excess can be easily removed with a cloth or polishing pad. With 60% solids content, one application is sufficient for normally used furniture such as shelves. For more heavily used areas, e.g., stairs or tabletops, a second application is recommended after overnight drying to fill pores and perfect the protection.

MATTE FINISH WITH INTENSE COLOR ENHANCEMENT

Both oils emphasize the color and grain of the wood and provide a matte finish. On dark wood such as oak or walnut, a warm enhancement is created, while on light wood such as spruce, a yellowish tint may occur, which is not to everyone's taste. Special oils that minimize the yellow tint are recommended here. Therefore, a test coat on an inconspicuous area is advisable.

EXPERIENCE TIP: DECIDE ACCORDING TO THE PROJECT

When choosing between the solvent-free HS Profiöl and the solvent-based Projektöl, various factors play a role: area of application, coverage, application preferences, and cost.

  • Projektöl: Projektöl is ideal especially for serial manufacturers who, for example, produce tables and use cotton pads for surface treatment. It impresses with its high self-penetration and easy application, especially for smaller objects or pieces of wood with complex geometries. Thanks to its solvent content, it is particularly easy to apply and is suitable for projects where handling plays a central role.

  • HS Profiöl: Professionals in the premium sector, such as table manufacturers or floor layers, prefer to use HS Profiöl. With its 100% solids content and the possibility of processing it with hardener (mixing ratio 10:1), it offers the highest demands on robustness, durability, and efficiency. Thanks to the solvent-free technology, often only one application is sufficient, which saves time and represents a particularly sustainable option.

Ultimately, it depends on the requirements of your project: Do you appreciate the simplicity and flexibility of Projektöl thanks to its solvent content? Or do you prefer the efficiency and time savings of a single oil application with HS Profiöl, even if the application technology is a bit more demanding?
