When, why, and how to water pop? In this blog, we explain what water popping is and what benefits this pre-treatment method for wood has before oiling. This video shows you how it's done.
Water popping, also known as grain popping in technical jargon, is a technique for optimally preparing wood surfaces before applying oils. In this method, the wood surface is evenly moistened with water, either with a sponge, a cloth, or, for wooden floors, with a mop. The moisture opens the wood pores and raises the fibers, allowing oils to penetrate deeper into the wood and color pigments to be absorbed better. Furthermore, water popping helps to dissolve wood ingredients and achieve a smoother, more even surface. This pre-treatment is often carried out before or after fine sanding.
Benefits of Water Popping:
- Higher oil absorption: Water popping allows the oil to penetrate deeper into the wood, which increases its protective effect.
- Even and more intense coloring: The technique ensures more even and deeper absorption of color oils, leading to a more intense color effect.
- Reduced sanding marks: Sanding marks created during sanding are minimized and are less visible after treatment.
- Reduction of water stains: The later formation of water stains is reduced by water popping. Adding OLI-NATURA outdoor cleaner to the water can help further minimize the risk of water stains.
Instructions for Water Popping:
- Preparation: Sand the wood to the desired grit and thoroughly de-dust the surface.
- Application: Apply clean, lukewarm water evenly to the wood surface. The surface should be misted without leaving puddles.
- Drying: Allow the wood to dry completely, which can take several hours depending on environmental conditions.
- Fine sanding: Lightly sand the dried surface with fine grit to smooth the wood fibers raised by the water. Work in the direction of the grain and with light pressure, then thoroughly de-dust the surface.
After this pre-treatment, the surface can be oiled according to the manufacturer's instructions. While water popping before oiling is not strictly necessary, it is a proven method to improve the quality and appearance of wood surfaces and achieve an even, aesthetically pleasing finish. Especially for woods with a high tannin content, such as oak, water popping can help reduce the risk of unsightly water stains. Adding OLI-NATURA outdoor cleaner to the water can also further minimize this risk.
Product tip: The OLI-NATURA Outdoor Cleaner can be used for water popping untreated, tannin-containing wood. It can significantly minimize the risk of tannin stains on the surface.
