Oiled Wood with Grip: HS Profiöl with tested slip resistance

Oiled wood surfaces not only look beautiful – with HS Profiöl they also retain the necessary grip. R10 as standard, R11 in the 2K version – tested according to EN 16165 at EPH Dresden. But how is this actually tested? And where is slip resistance particularly important?

Whether parquet flooring or wooden stairs – oiled wooden surfaces with HS Profiöl are in demand. No wonder: they not only look naturally beautiful, but also feel pleasantly warm underfoot and can be re-oiled at any time. But the question that concerns many professionals and builders is: Are oiled wooden surfaces also slip-resistant – and where is this particularly important?

Slip-resistant wooden surfaces: why they are so important

When it comes to safety, the legislator takes a close look.
The Workplace Ordinance (ArbStättV) and the Technical Rule ASR A1.5 "Floors" clearly state: Where there is a risk of slipping, the floor must achieve a certain slip resistance class (R-class).

Testing the slip resistance of wooden surfaces according to EN 16165 in the ramp test

And how is that tested? With the ramp test: A wooden sample is coated with oil, placed on an inclined plane, and slowly tilted. A tester with standardized shoes walks on it – until they slip. The angle of the first slip determines the class. Sounds like balance training in the lab – but it is a strictly standardized procedure according to EN 16165.

Where safety counts

Whether wooden floors or stairs – tested safety is required everywhere. Indoors, the following applies:
  • R9: dry areas like offices – here the minimum level of safety is sufficient.
  • R10: schools, kindergartens or sales areas – wherever many feet are on the go.
  • R11: more heavily used or damp areas like entrance areas, canteens or sanitary facilities.
  • R12/R13: the realm of commercial kitchens and slaughterhouses – wood prefers to say: "No, thank you."
Officially tested – no private label

So that no one thinks we made it up ourselves, we sent our HS Profiöl to the Development and Testing Laboratory for Wood Technology (EPH) Dresden.
The accredited institute specializes in wood surfaces and tests strictly according to EN 16165. Result: an independent test certificate – instead of a pretty private label.
