Here are helpful answers to frequently asked questions about cutting board oil:
1) What is the difference between a basic and an initial treatment?
Basic treatment, also called initial treatment, is when a raw and untreated or completely sanded wooden board is treated for the first time. The linseed oil varnish is applied to the wood in 2-3 coats. Maintenance treatment refers to refreshing an already treated wooden surface. In this case, the oil is used sparingly to refill the pores of the wood and make it look fresh. Simply apply some oil to a cloth or pad and wipe it evenly over the clean surface of the board.
2) Is linseed oil varnish suitable for cutting boards?
Yes, our linseed oil varnish is suitable for cutting boards and has been tested for food safety. It complies with Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 and can therefore be safely used on wooden surfaces that come into contact with food.
3) Can I oil a board treated with olive oil with linseed oil varnish?
Many cooking oils, such as olive oil or mineral oils, are "non-drying" oils. They do not harden in the wood and can soften the wood fibers, which is difficult to correct later. For this reason, we recommend not carrying out a subsequent maintenance treatment with OLI-NATURA Linseed Oil Varnish.
4) Are oil-soaked cloths self-combustible?
Yes, linseed oil is a "drying oil" and reacts with atmospheric oxygen to harden. This generates heat, which cannot escape from crumpled rags and can lead to heat accumulation. Therefore, it is best to moisten oil-soaked cloths and let them dry spread out outdoors. After that, they can be safely disposed of. However, the linseed oil varnish itself is not self-combustible.
5) How often should I re-oil?
The frequency of care intervals largely depends on the usage. If the wood is no longer smooth, appears brittle and dry, and no longer effectively repels water, it's time to re-oil the cutting board.
6) How do I clean my cutting board correctly?
Clean the wooden cutting board immediately after use to prevent crusting.
- Wash the cutting board with water as hot as possible and clean it with a little dish soap.
- Then dry the board thoroughly and let it dry upright.
- Never put wooden cutting boards in the dishwasher.
- Wipe both sides with a damp cloth to prevent warping.
